NIGEL BOONHAM SCULPTURE: THE LION RIDER

   

Original plaster 1.22m h, bronze edition of 3: Commission for the headquarters of the TSB in Birmingham through Art for Work, also known as Self Confidence. Based on the Hindu Goddess Durga whose epithet is Simhavahini: sanskrit meaning 'lion rider' because her vehicle is a lion. Also connected to the ancient Phrygian 'earth mother' Cybele who ruled over all nature and whose chariot was pulled by lions.
